Hey, check this out! This genius at Cornell has invented a type of tomato that is VIRUS and BUG resistant! How cool is that?
The special tomato has enzymes that control the spread and feeding of thrips, tiny bugs that love nothing more than to suck the liquid out of tomatoes and hundreds of other delicious crops. It’s a good sign for future genetic projects that aim to eliminate the need for pesticides in commercial agriculture.
With so much chatter lately about pesticides and the harm they do to bugs (and people) it’s interesting to imagine what people will think about a genetically-modified crop that doesn’t need pesticides. Not exactly organic but…close?
